Nikolic, Schweinsteiger finish top-5 in MLS Newcomer of the Year voting

Fire striker and MLS Golden Boot winner Nemanja Nikolicfinished second in the voting for the league's 2017 Newcomer of the Year award, presented annually since 2007 to the year's most impactful MLS player with previous professional experience. Atlanta United midfielder Miguel Almíron was announced as the top vote-getter on Monday afternoon. 


German legend Bastian Schweinsteiger gave the Men In Red a pair of top-5 finishers in the voting, checking in at No. 5. Atlanta's Josef Martinez (No. 3) and Toronto's Victor Vasquez (No. 4) rounded out the top-5 finishers in this year's voting. 


Nikolic, who was named as Goal.com's MLS Newcomer of the Year on Friday, remains one of five finalists for the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player Award. The winner will be announced Dec. 4.
