Chicago Fire Eliminated from Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with 1-0 Loss to Union

PHILADELPHIA – The Chicago Fire made their last stop in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night, falling 1-0 against the Philadelphia in semifinal action at PPL Park.
“I’m gutted for the club and our fans right now,” said Fire head coach Frank Yallop. “This game meant a lot to us and we came out with what we felt was our best available lineup. We were obviously hoping to host the final next month, so this hurts. Now, we need to pick ourselves up because we have an important game on Sunday.”
A goal from Sebastien Le Toux in the 74th minute was the difference. After Fire midfielder Shaun Maloney tracked back to deflect a pass, the ball bounced fortuitously into Le Toux’s path. The French winger took three touches across the top of the box and whipped a shot off the lower near-post and into the net.

Kennedy Igboananike nearly equalized for Chicago in the 83rd minute with a spectacular bicycle kick. His shot was destined for goal if not for an alert save from Union goalkeeper John McCarthy.
The Fire will remain in Philadelphia for a rematch against the Union on Sunday, Aug. 16 at PPL Park. This time, the two will meet in MLS regular season action with kickoff slated for 6 p.m. CT on FOX Sports.
