Match Preview

One week after their opening match of FIFA World Cup 2026, the USMNT are back in action, this time in Seattle.

The final result was well worth the wait for 70,492 fans at Los Angeles Stadium – at least, for the majority clad in U.S. red, white and blue. The USMNT dispelled any lingering questions going into the tournament with a 4-1 victory against Paraguay that was never in doubt. The match opened with an own goal struck home by the Paraguyan defense, but forward Folarin Balogun added a game-winner in the 31st minute before striking again shortly before the half. The South Americans pulled one back in the 73rd minute to remain in the match. But substitute Gio Reyna struck the goal of a young tournament with a a left-footed shot that sealed the match, three points and a lead in Group D.

Reyna's goal proved crucial a day later, when Australia opened its World Cup with the first real upset of the tournament. Facing a vaunted Türkiye side with plenty of renowned players based in Europe, the Socceroos held their own until forward Nestory Irankunda netted the opener in the 27th minute. The Anatolian side attempted to respond, but Australia exploited their desperation with a second goal in the second half. After 15 minutes of sterling defensive play highlighted by goalkeeper Patrick Beach's fine saves, the Aussies completed a 2-0 upset to unexpectedly slot into second place of Group D – just one goal behind the USMNT.
