Match Preview

For the first time in football history, Canada welcomes the world to the FIFA World Cup on home soil.

It will only be the third edition of the tournament that the North American side has participated in. Its only appearance in the World Cup for decades was in the 1986 edition held in Mexico. It would take until 2022 to earn its second apperance, but it certainly made noise along the way. Finishing first in Concacaf qualifying, a young squad led by Vancouver Whitecaps FC product Alphonso Davies made their debuts in Qatar. Although the competition did not go the way the young team wanted, the experience was invaluable, especially for Chicago Fire FC defender Joel Waterman, who is back for his second straight World Cup with CANMNT.

Facing the hosts in Toronto is a suprising Bosnia & Herzegovina, which kicks off its second apperance in the tournament ranked 64th in the world. The Balkan nation finished second in its group in European qualifying before advancing to a pair of play-off matches, first against Wales, then against Italy.  It was against Italy that the Dragons stunned the world, earning a ticket to North America with a shootout victory over the four-time World Cup champions that was finished by former Chicago Fire Academy player and New England Revolution midfielder Esmir Bajraktarević.

On June 17, 1994, the eyes of the world turned to Soldier Field as the Untied States hosted the FIFA World Cup for the first time in history. A tournament that started with a 1-0 German victory over Bolivia – with a goal by future USMNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann – turned into the most-attended World Cup of all time.

The greatest sporting event in the world is now back for a second time in the United States, this time with twice the number of teams in the 1994 edition and across three countries. It also comes with the sport fully a part of American sporting culture; Major League Soccer would kick off two years later. The world may have been different back then, but the resolve is the same for U.S..

The youngest side in the 2022 edition has come of age, with many of its players seeing minutes four years earlier in Qatar, The expectations are higher this time for the USMNT, with players in their prime and a world-class head coach in Mauricio Pochettino at the helm. The rise in standards was especially apparent in the goalkeeper unit, whose selection was up in the air as late as May. But an outstanding 2026 regular season helped Chicago Fire Homegrown and Naperville native Chris Brady earn his first call-up to the USMNT, the first for any Academy graduate or Homegrown player to a World Cup roster.

Paraguay will not arrive with similar fanfare as the U.S., but the quality is ever-present. The South American nation has a rich footballing tradition, appearing in the very first edition of the FIFA World Cup in 1930 – facing the United States, no less. Its 10th apperance comes after an incredibly competitive South American qualifying campaign that saw it finish tied in points with perennial favorites Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. The team is led by players with deep MLS connections: Atlanta United icon Miguel Almirón and former Inter Miami CF midfielder Diego Gómez, who now plies his trade with Premier League side Brighton Hove & Albion.
