A trio of Chicago Fire players are taking on athletes from around the world in a competition to win money for charity.
Álvaro Medrán, Djordje Mihailović and Connor Sparrow have each advanced to the semifinals of the ongoing Twitch Rivals: SuperGames ft. Fortnite tournament.
The online competition invited pro athletes across global sports leagues to form duos and play to earn their share of $1,000,000 in prize money, all to be donated to charity.
The tournament began on Monday with more than 200 players competing in the first round of qualifiers and the top 50 duos advancing to the semifinals. Sparrow (36th), Medrán (40th), and Mihailović (43rd) all advanced with their respective partners. Sparrow is teamed up with Nick Besler of Real Salt Lake, Medrán is competing with William Nylander of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Mihailović is partnered with Diego Fagundez of the New England Revolution.
By making it to the semifinals, each team has already won $2,000 for charity. The prize money will increase from there depending on final placement.
The next round featuring the top 50 duos will be held on Thursday from 3-5 pm CT. Each team will play a series of five games and the top 12 finishers advance to the Supergames Final, where third place takes home $75,000, second place claims $100,000, and the winning team walks away with $150,000 for charity.
Thursday's competition will be streamed live on Twitch Rivals, where viewers will bounce around to different gameplay from players around the globe.
The teams who advance from the semifinals will take part in a live draft on Monday, April 20 in which pre-selected pairs of professional Twitch streamers draft players to form squads for a final showdown. That final will be held two days later on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 pm CT.
