Chicago Fire Close Road Trip with 1-0 Loss Against New York Red Bulls

Razvan Cocis

HARRISON, N.J. (May 18, 2016) -- The Chicago Fire closed their three-game road trip with a 1-0 loss against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Wednesday.

Playing their third game in eight days, the Fire limited the defending MLS Supporters' Shield winners to one shot on goal. Unfortunately for Chicago, that one shot stood up despite a number of quality chances for the Fire during the course of the match.

The Fire's first chance came in the 19th minute. Brandon Vincent looped a cross into the box and Razvan Cocis won the header, directing his shot to the lower corner. Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles dove to make the save and keep the sides level.

David Accam rattled the crossbar in the 30th minute. The Fire took a set piece 40 yards away from the goal and played it short to Accam. The Ghanaian winger put the ball onto his right foot and crushed a shot that beat Robles, but not the frame.

New York pulled into the lead in the 58th minute, capitalizing on a Fire turnover in the back. Bradley Wright-Phillips stepped in front of a pass along the backline to start the sequence. He then back-heeled a pass to Lloyd Sam and Sam laid the ball off for teammate Mike Grella, whose open run on the far side of the box resulted in a shot and a 1-0 lead.

Chicago pressed for the equalizer and had several half chances during the final half hour, but couldn't break through with the game-tying goal.

The Men in Red return home to face the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, May 21 at Toyota Park. Kickoff is 4 p.m. CT on CSN Chicago Plus and 97.5 FM Poder.
