Xherdan Shaqiri Named to Switzerland National Team UEFA EURO 2024 Roster

CHICAGO (June 7, 2024) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been named to the final Switzerland National Team roster for UEFA EURO 2024.

The four-time FIFA World Cup veteran will join the Swiss Men’s Nati for a third UEFA EURO Championship, having represented Switzerland in the 2016 and 2020 editions of the tournament. Shaqiri scored three goals in EURO 2020, twice against Turkey and once against eventual tournament semifinalists Spain. The midfielder has earned 122 caps and scored 31 goals for Switzerland since making his senior team debut on March 3, 2010.

Switzerland was drawn into Group A alongside Hungary, Scotland and Germany. The team will begin group play against Hungary at 8:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, June 15 at Rhein Energie Stadion in Cologne, Germany, before taking on Scotland at 2:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 19, also in Cologne. Switzerland will round out Group A play against tournament host Germany at 2:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, June 23 at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.

With the Fire, Shaqiri has served as captain and started in nine of the 11 matches he has played this season, registering two goals and two assists so far in 2024. The Switzerland international has played in 68 matches (58 starts) and scored 14 goals and 18 assists since joining the Men in Red in 2022.

Following a bye week due to the FIFA window, the Fire will travel to face Toronto FC on Saturday, June 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass and transmitted locally via wlsam.com (English) and WRTO 1200 AM (Spanish).
