Xherdan Shaqiri Called Up to Switzerland National Team for Training Camp Ahead of UEFA EURO 2024

CHICAGO (May 17, 2024) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been called to the Switzerland National Team for a training camp ahead of UEFA EURO 2024. Switzerland will play two international friendly matches in June, with the final EURO 2024 roster being announced Friday, June 7.

The four-time World Cup veteran will join the Swiss Men’s Nati as the team takes on Estonia at 1:15 p.m. CT on Tuesday, June 4 at the Swissporarena in Lucerne, Switzerland. The team will then host Austria at 11:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, June 8 at AFG Arena in St. Gallen, Switzerland.

It will be the final training camp for Switzerland ahead of EURO 2024, where it was drawn into Group A alongside Hungary, Scotland and Germany. The team will begin group play against Hungary at 8:00 a.m. CT on Saturday, June 15 at Rhein Energie Stadion in Cologne, Germany, before taking on Scotland at 2:00 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 19, also in Cologne. Switzerland will round out Group A play against tournament host Germany at 2:00 p.m. CT on Sunday, June 23 at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.

With the Fire, Shaqiri has served as captain and started in nine of the 11 matches he has played this season, registering two goals and two assists so far in 2024. The Switzerland international has played in 68 matches (58 starts) and scored 13 goals and 18 assists since joining the Men in Red in 2022.

Chicago returns to action against the defending MLS champion Columbus Crew on Saturday, May 18, at Soldier Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT and the match will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass. The match will also be transmitted locally via in English and WRTO 1200 AM in Spanish.
