Match Preview

With the top spot in Group D wrapped and qualification to the knockout round secured, the USMNT will look for a perfect group stage record with a win against an already-eliminated Türkiye in Los Angeles.

After an dominant performance in a 4-1 victory over Paraguay to open FIFA World Cup 2026, the United Stated traveled north to Seattle to face Australia on a sunny Friday afternoon. Just like in the opener in LA the previous week, the U.S. forced an own goal before the quarter hour mark to set the tone early. Although a gritty Aussie defense quieted the American attack for long stretches of the match, defender Alex Freeman put the game on ice before halftime with his first goal for his country. Tim Ream and the USMNT backline played out a clean second half with few concerns to claim the top spot in Group D, clinching it for good with a surprising result later that night.

A few hundred miles down the Pacific coast in Santa Clara, Türkiye and Paraguay faced off smarting from opening losses in World Cup play. Just seconds into the match, Atlanta United's Matías Galarza stunned the favored Turkish side with an opening goal for La Albirroja that was the only one in a chippy opening half. Stoppage time brought further surprises: a red card shown to Galarza's club and country teammate, Miguel Almirón. Despite facing the might of a vaunted Turkish attack, the resilient South Americans held on for the victory, eliminating the European side and handing the USMNT a ticket to the knockout round as Group D winners.
