Match Preview

Chicago Fire FC will host Orlando City SC on Wednesday, Oct. 28 in the last match of the regular season at Soldier Field.

With slim playoff hopes at stake for Atlanta United FC on Saturday, the hosts took a 1-0 lead against Chicago just four minutes in. But the Fire equalized before the end of the half via Anton Salétros’ half-volley from beyond the box. Halftime substitute Anzor Mekvabishvili then pounced on a wayward goal kick in the box six minutes into the half, before a back pass in the Atlanta box gave Salétros an indirect free kick and assist upon Philip Zinckernagel’s finish in a congested six-yard box. The 5-Stripes added another goal but could not muster any more, giving the Men in Red their first league win in Atlanta and their 15th of the season.

Orlando hosted New York City FC on Saturday looking to close in on postseason qualification. The visitors struck first in the 18th minute before Designated Player Antoine Griezmann equalized – his 20th goal contribution in only 15 matches with the Lions. Martín Ojeda then gave Orlando a 2-1 lead with his team-leading 16th goal of the season. The deficit went well beyond regulation time for the visitors, but midfielder Jonathan Shore nicked one back in the 10th minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for New York City.

Chicago's very own Mr. T stopped by the Endeavor Health Performance Center to cheer on the Fire before his Sound the Alarm appearance on Wednesday.

Hyundai Keys to the Match:

  • The A-Team: Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Noah Allen have played superbly in defense. Anzor Mekvabishvili just scored his first goal. The new guys have made an impact early and could do more against Orlando.
  • B.A. Baracus: Fire won a tough road match against Atlanta shortly after Mr. T came by to lift up the team. Can his Sound the Alarm appearance push them to another win against Orlando?
  • One Chicago: The Men in Red play the last match of the season on the lakefront in appreciation of fans and first responders. The Fire will seek one final thank you for the support: their 10th win at Soldier Field, the most since 2001.

Philip Zinckernagel is getting hot at the right time, scoring the game-winner against Atlanta with the postseason approaching

Match Notes

  • Philip Zinckernagel’s game-winning goal against Atlanta lifted his career goal contribution total to 47, the most in any two-year stretch in Club history. A goal or assist against Orlando would help Zinckernagel reach the top 10 in the Club’s all-time list of goal contributions by a single player.
  • Zinckernagel leads all current players with three goal contributions in the series, all coming in the form of a goal and two assists in the 3-1 victory at Orlando on May 31, 2025. He then became the first Fire player to tally two assists in a playoff match since 2005 in the 3-1 Wild Card win over the Lions on Oct. 22.
  • Defenders Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Suspended) and Sam Rogers (Lower Body), and midfielders Robin Lod (Lower Body) and Dje D'Avilla (Suspended) will not be available against Orlando. Midfielder André Franco (Lower Body) is listed as Questionable.
