Match Recap | Maren Haile-Selassie Records Brace in 4-4 Road Draw against Toronto FC

Chicago is unbeaten in its last six MLS matches, the most since 2017

TORONTO (Sept. 5, 2026) – Chicago Fire FC (11-6-5, 38 points) finished a four-game league road trip with a 4-4 draw against Toronto FC (5-7-11, 26 points) on Saturday evening at BMO Field.

Winger Maren Haile-Selassie scored two goals in a match for the first time since 2023, also helping forward Robert Lewandowski notch his fifth goal in Major League Soccer. Defender Noah Allen and forward Johan Gómez both made their debuts with Chicago.

Haile-Selassie opened the fireworks following a corner kick clearance in the 13th minute. The winger reeled in the ball, took a touch and rifled a shot that deflected into an open goal for the early lead.

Toronto forward Josh Sargent took over near the half hour mark, getting behind the Fire defense to tie the match in the 27th minute. Sargent then collected a loose ball in the box 11 minutes later and sent it into the net to give his side the lead going into halftime.

Chicago answered out of the gates in the second half, as winger Philip Zinckernagel lashed a cross into the box intended for Lewandowski that a Toronto defender knocked in for the equalizer. But Sargent once again put the home side ahead, as he gathered a pass from midfielder Djordje Mihailovic and completed his hat trick in the 54th minute.

Down by one goal for a second time, Chicago leveled the score for a final time four minutes later. Right back Jonathan Dean centered toward Lewandowski, forcing Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran to punch it away. The rebound fell to Haile-Selassie at the top of the box, who finished cleanly for his second time in the night.

After his involvement in several chances throughout the night, Lewandowski finally got his goal shortly thereafter. Dean sent the ball forward to Zinckernagel, who dribbled through pressure and sent a pass into the box for Haile-Selassie. The winger feigned a shot, instead letting the ball go through his legs for the Polish striker to finish coolly for the Fire lead.

The visitors held on to the lead through stoppage time, but the Toronto bench made a difference in the closing stages. Substitute winger Derrick Etienne Jr. arrived late into the box to curl in a shot that found the opposite corner of the goal. The crowd erupted as both sides settled for a point and an extension of their respective six-game unbeaten streaks in league play.

NEXT MATCH: Chicago faces off against Eastern Conference foe Inter Miami in a midweek match on the lakefront. Kickoff on Wednesday, Sept. 9, is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT at Soldier Field. • Chicago made it six consecutive matches without a loss in Major League Soccer, its longest streak since 2017, when the Fire went 11 in a row in an eventual playoff campaign.

• Maren Haile-Selassie scored twice in a match for the first time since a 4-1 victory over Inter Miami CF on October 4, 2023 at Soldier Field. His second goal tonight was his seventh of 2026, setting a new single season career-high. It was also the 48th goal contribution of his career for Chicago, now tied for eighth-most in the category with David Accam and Jesse Marsch in Club history.

• Haile-Selassie tied Hugo Cuypers for the team lead in goal contributions with 15 this year. His seven goals and eight assists in 2026 put him just ahead of Philip Zinckernagel, who notched his ninth assist of 2026 to go with five goals.

• Defender Noah Allen and forward Johan Gómez both made their debuts with the Fire in Toronto, with Gómez making his MLS debut as well.

• Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi (Lower Body), midfielder André Franco (Lower Body) and winger Jonathan Bamba (Lower Body) were unavailable for selection tonight.
