Chicago Fire FC returns to the lakefront after a week off to face Supporters’ Shield contenders Philadelphia Union on Wednesday night at Soldier Field. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and the match will be broadcast across the globe on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV. It will be transmitted locally in English on wlsam.com and in Spanish on Que Buena Fire via the Uforia App.
The Fire will kick off the second half of the season against Philadelphia with a 7-6-4 record and 25 points, just five under last season’s total of 30 points. They also boast one of the league’s premier attacks, with their 35 goals good for second in the league behind Inter Miami CF. Trailing one goal behind are the Union, with one of the best attacking sides in the league backed by the third-best scoring defense in the league.
Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter has named the following Starting XI tasked with getting three points in midweek action:
- Chicago will see two changes to the Starting XI that closed out the first half of the season against Nashville SC on Saturday, June 14.
- Philip Zinckernagel returns to the lakefront to start his 16th match of the season. The Danish winger has scored in four consecutive matches, pacing the Fire with 14 goal contributions this season. He will line up on the right side of the midfield, next to the Homegrown duo of Mauricio Pineda and Sergio Oregel Jr. in the middle of the pitch.
- Leonardo Barroso will make his third start of the year at right back. The Portuguese defender has played in four consecutive matches coming into tonight’s game, but will make his first start since March 29 against CF Montréal. He will line up across the field from left back Andrew Gutman, who has started in all of the Club’s 18 matches this season.
- Defenders Jack Elliott and Omar González will line up between Barroso and Gutman at center back for the fourth consecutive match. González will play in the 299th regular season match of his MLS career, while Elliott will wear the captain’s armband in the 228th start of his career.
- The back line will aid goalkeeper Jeff Gal in his third consecutive start of the season filling in for Chris Brady, who is with the U.S. Men’s National Team in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup.
- Rounding out the midfield alongside Zinckernagel, Oregel Jr. and Pineda is Jonathan Bamba, who starts on the left side for a perfect 18th time this season. The Ivorian international leads the Fire with seven assists alongside Zinckernagel, and will look to add to his three goals this season.
- The duo of Hugo Cuypers and Brian Gutiérrez will lead the attack against Philadelphia. Cuypers will look for a repeat performance of his last match against the Union, when he scored a second half brace to finish the Fire’s 4-3 comeback victory on July 3, 2024, earning the title of MLS Player of the Matchday.
- Beside Brady, defenders Carlos Terán (Lower Body) and Christopher Cupps (Lower Body); and midfielders Rominigue Kouamé (Lower Body), Chris Mueller (Not Due to Injury) and David Poreba (Lower Body) are also unavailable for selection today.
- Available off the bench for Berhalter are goalkeeper Bryan Dowd; defenders Jonathan Dean and Sam Rogers; midfielders Maren Haile-Selassie, Kellyn Acosta, Omari Glasgow, Dje D’Avilla and Sam Williams; and forward Tom Barlow.
