2018 FIFA World Cup

June 20 | Two World Cup teams through to the Round of 16

Portugal vs. Morocco

Russia and Uruguay are the first two teams to advance to the Round of 16 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, following Uruguay’s 1-0 victory against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. As a result, Group A opponents Saudi Arabia and Egypt are eliminated from the tournament.

Meanwhile in Group B, Portugal defeated Morocco 1-0 from a 4th minute Cristiano Ronaldo header and Spain beat Iran 1-0 to put both Portugal and Spain at the top of the table with four points each. The final, deciding games for Group B take place on Monday, June 25.

Our Fire players may have a game against Atlanta United in the U.S. Open Cup and a regular season game facing the Seattle Sounders on Saturday, but they are definitely keeping abreast of the World Cup happenings.

Midfielder Drew Conner's tweet garnered a favorable response from his Fire teammate and Spaniard Jon Bakero -- although it's unlikely the rest of the players will concur.

Thursday's games will feature Lionel Messi back in action as he tries to secure the first win for Argentina in this year's World Cup. He will be up against a Croatian team that defeated Nigeria 2-0.

Here are the matches for Day 8:

  • 7 AM CT: Denmark vs Australia (Group C)
  • 10 AM CT: France vs Peru (Group C)
  • 1 PM CT: Argentina vs Croatia (Group D)
