Chicago Fire Soccer Club Signs Diego Campos to New Contract

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill.(Dec. 21, 2018) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced today that it has signed Diego Campos to a new contract. Campos, 23, is under contract for the 2019 MLS season with Club options for 2020, 2021 and 2022.


“When we drafted Diego and signed him to a reserve contract, we promised him that we would improve that original deal if he outperformed in his first professional season,” said Chicago Fire President and General Manager Nelson Rodriguez. “Happily, he demonstrated the character and ability that we projected of him. I’m pleased for Diego, as he has fully earned this improved contract.”


In his rookie season, Campos made 23 appearances (13 starts), recording one goal and two assists for the Fire in 2018. His 23 appearances and 13 starts ranked as the most on the team among rookies, while his 17 chances created ranked as the fourth-most overall on the team.


“I’m very grateful to the Club for believing in me and offering me this new contract,” said Campos. “I’m eager to get back to work and begin helping the team achieve our goals in 2019.”


Campos was originally selected by the Fire in the second round (38th overall) of the 2018 MLS SuperDraft from Clemson University. In 81 career games for the Tigers, Campos scored 23 goals and tallied 22 assists. The San Jose, Costa Rica, native was also named to the All-South Region First Team and All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) First Team in his senior season.
