CHICAGO (Aug. 24, 2026) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has loaned Homegrown defender Christopher Cupps to Scottish club Greenock Morton F.C. through the end of 2026. Chicago retains the right to recall Cupps at any point, subject to MLS roster compliance guidelines. Per Club policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are excited to see Christopher continue to develop during the rest of the year in a new and challenging environment,” said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Gregg Broughton. “He has a very high potential and promising future at the Chicago Fire and has stepped up to every challenge he has faced so far. Playing competitive matches during the rest of the year will only help him mature as a player and as a person.”
Cupps, 18, became the 27th Homegrown Player in Club history when he signed a first-team contract on Feb. 18, 2025. The young defender has started three of the six regular season matches in which he has played for the Fire since his Major League Soccer debut against Nashville SC on April 26, 2025. He became the youngest player in Club history to ever start a match for the Chicago Fire in the 0-0 draw against Orlando City SC on May 31, 2025.
He has seen action across various age categories of the U.S. Youth National Teams, most recently as a member of the U.S. U-19 Men’s National Team that qualified for the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. He was also a member of the U-17 USMNT for the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, where he started all four matches of the tournament and wore the captain's armband in the knockout stage.
