Chicago Fire FC Defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi Named to South Africa National Team Roster for Africa Cup of Nations

CHICAGO (Dec. 15, 2025) – Chicago Fire FC defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi was named to the South Africa National Team roster for the Africa Cup of Nations that will take place Dec. 21-Jan. 18 in Morocco.

Mbokazi joined South Africa’s training camp in Morocco last week after leading the Orlando Pirates to a Carling Cup championship. Bafana Bafana will play a friendly match against Ghana at 8 a.m. CT on Dec. 15 before kicking off the group stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.

South Africa was placed in Group B along with Angola, Egypt and Zimbabwe. Group B action begins on Monday, Dec. 22, as South Africa faces Angola at 11 a.m. CT, before taking on Egypt at 9 a.m CT on Dec. 26. Bafana Bafana will close out Group B play against Zimbabwe at 10 a.m. CT on Dec. 29.

Mbokazi made his senior national team debut in May 2025 in a 2-0 win against Mozambique and was also called up for FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria during the September 2025 FIFA International window. Mbokazi joined the Chicago Fire in November and will occupy a U-22 initiative slot and an international roster position on the roster.

The young defender has made his mark with both the South Africa U-20 Men’s National Team as well as the senior South Africa squad. At the youth level, he was named to the roster for the 2024 COSAFA U-20 Cup, which South Africa won and qualified for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
