CHICAGO (Sept. 1, 2026) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has acquired winger Johan Gómez (pronounced: JOE-hahn GO-mehz) from Eintracht Braunschweig of the German 2. Bundesliga via transfer. His contract with the Fire will run through the 2028-29 season, with a Club option for the 2029-30 season.
“We’re excited to add a player of Johan’s caliber to the club,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “To have already accumulated more than 100 appearances in Germany at his age speaks to both his quality and consistency. His versatility gives us valuable flexibility across multiple positions, and we believe he will strengthen the group as we continue building a competitive roster.”
Gómez, 25, joins Chicago with 200 appearances across various leagues and competitions in the U.S. and Europe. During his time with Braunschweig, he made 99 appearances across all competitions since joining the club in the 2023-24 season, recording four goals and nine assists and helping the team to remain in the 2. Bundesliga and avoid relegation in 2024-25.
The Arlington, Texas, native began his professional career in 2019 with North Texas SC of USL League One before making the jump to FC Porto B of the Portuguese LigaPro in 2020. Gómez made 23 appearances and scored a goal with Porto B in the 2020-21 season before transferring to FSV Zwickau of the German 3. Liga. With Zwickau, Gómez appeared in 75 matches across all competitions, scoring 15 goals and registering seven assists.
At the international level, Gómez has represented the United States at the U-20 and U-23 age level, earning seven caps and scoring two goals for the U.S. U-23 Men’s National Team under head coach Marko Mitrović.
