Portland Timbers to receive Canadian international Joel Waterman in exchange
CHICAGO (Sept. 3, 2026) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that the Club has received $100,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money, as well as a future sell and trade percentage, from the Portland Timbers in exchange for defender Joel Waterman. The Club may acquire an additional $100,000 if certain performance metrics are met. The agreement was completed prior to the close of the Secondary Transfer Window.
“We thank Joel for his contributions to the Club over the past two seasons,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “He played an important role in helping stabilize our back line during last year's playoff push and has been a valued presence within the group. We believe this move provides greater flexibility as we strengthen our roster, and we wish Joel nothing but success moving forward.”
Waterman, 30, joined the Fire in August 2025, and helped to guide the team to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2017. The Canadian international played 26 matches across all competitions and scored two goals for the Fire, including MLS Cup Playoffs, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and Leagues Cup.
Waterman has earned 17 caps for the Canada Men’s National Team, featuring in several friendlies and CONCACAF Nations League matches. He was also a member of Canada’s 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad, as well as the 2024 Copa America, 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2026 FIFA World Cup rosters.
Transaction: Chicago Fire FC acquired $100,000 in GAM from the Portland Timbers in exchange for defender Joel Waterman. The Club may acquire an additional $100,000 if certain performance metrics are met.
