Chicago Fire Announce 2015 Team Award Winners

CHICAGO (Oct. 28, 2015) – The Chicago Fire Soccer Club announced its annual team award winners, naming David Accam Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner, and defender Eric Gehrig as the Defensive Player of the Year.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER/GOLDEN BOOT: Midfielder David Accam was named 2015 Chicago Fire Most Valuable Player. Accam signed with the Fire from Swedish Allsvenskan side Helsingborgs IF on Dec. 19, 2014. Accam made his Fire debut against the San Jose Earthquakes on March 22 and opened his goal scoring account on April 24, notching the lone goal in a 1-0 win over New York City FC. In 23 matches this season, Accam scored a team-leading 10 goals and added two assists. A native of Accra, Ghana, Accam made his senior international debut for the Black Stars on Jan. 19, 2015 in the first group match against Senegal in the African Cup of Nations and scored his first international goal on June 14 in a 7-1 defeat of Maurituis.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: In his first season with the Men in Red, Fire PDL product Eric Gehrig has been named Defensive Player of the Year. Acquired from Orlando City SC on Dec. 10, 2014, Gehrig made a career-high 25 appearances for the Fire this season. On May 22, Gehrig tallied the assist on Jason Johnson’s 94th-minute equalizer as the Fire earned the 2-2 road draw against Columbus Crew SC.
