Lewis to Lead Orlando City SC Academy as Technical Director
CHICAGO (Sept. 2, 2026) – Chicago Fire FC today announced that Academy Technical Director Gary Lewis will depart the Club. Lewis’ last day with Chicago will be Saturday, Sept. 19, after which he will lead Orlando City SC as Academy Technical Director.
“Gary has made a hugely valuable contribution to the Chicago Fire, helping us have the most minutes by academy graduates in MLS last season, while also ensuring that every graduating player either secured a professional contract or a college scholarship,” said Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Gregg Broughton. “That tells you everything about the care and commitment he has shown to the young players here, and we are extremely grateful for his service.
“The structure he has built will continue to produce players long after he has gone, and that is a legacy any academy director should be incredibly proud to leave.”
The Liverpool, England, native joined Chicago in January 2023 and oversaw the technical direction of the five teams within the Academy. Together with Chicago Fire Director of Methodology and Talent Manager Vincent Cavin and Vice President of Football Frank Klopas, Lewis worked closely with first team and Chicago Fire II technical staffs to ensure continuity from the Academy to the professional level.
“I would like to thank the Chicago Fire for the trust they placed in me during the past several seasons,” said Lewis. “It has been a pleasure to work with so many great coaches and athletes and watching so many young players grow into young men and professionals has truly been an honor.”
Under Lewis, seven players have signed contracts directly from the Chicago Fire Academy to MLS NEXT Pro side Chicago Fire FC II. Additionally, Homegrown players Christopher Cupps and Robert Turdean signed directly to the Chicago Fire from the Chicago Fire Academy, making their first team debuts during his tenure.
