CHICAGO (March 15, 2024) ā Chicago Fire FC today announced that midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been called to the Switzerland National Team for two international friendly matches in March.
The four-time World Cup veteran will join the Swiss Menās Nati as the team takes on Denmark at 2:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, March 23, at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Denmark. The team will then travel to face Ireland at 2:45 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 26 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
Switzerland is gearing up for EURO 2024, where it was drawn into Group A alongside Hungary, Scotland and Germany. The team will begin group play against Hungary at 8:00 a.m. CT on June 15 at Rhein Energie Stadion in Cologne, Germany, before taking on Scotland at 2:00 p.m. CT on June 19, also in Cologne. Switzerland will round out Group A play against tournament host Germany at 2:00 p.m. CT on June 23 at Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt.
With the Fire, Shaqiri has served as captain and started all three of the Clubās matches so far this season, registering one goal in 240 minutes. The Switzerland international has played in 60 matches (52 starts) and scored 13 goals and 16 assists since joining the Fire in 2022.
Chicago returns to action against CF MontrƩal on Saturday, March 16, at Soldier Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT on MLS Season Pass. The match will also be transmitted locally via wlsam.com in English and WRTO 1200 AM in Spanish.
