Major League Soccer and Southern New Hampshire University are in the midst of the Back of the Net initiative, a project that partners with the United Service Organization (USO) to celebrate and give back to veterans during the month of July.

During a two-week period that began Friday, July 1 and ends Wednesday, July 13, $2,000 will be donated by Southern New Hampshire University to the USO for each goal scored in MLS matches. In addition, the Chicago Fire, other MLS clubs and the league itself will be posting to Twitter with the call to retweet for an additional dollar donation. For each retweet of the goal announcements on social media, an additional $1 will be donated to the USO.

After defeating the San Jose Earthquakes (1-0) and falling to Toronto FC (1-0) in its first two matches within the donation window, the Fire play their third and final match at home tonight vs. Sporting KC (July 13, 7:30 p.m.).

For 75 years, the USO has been dedicated to supporting America’s service members and their loved ones. One of their areas of focus is the transition of returning soldiers back to civilian life. All funds donated through the Back of the Net initiative will go towards USO programming and resources to support transitioning service members and their families.
