Kick Off: Drogba Dream

Didier Drogba

Chelsea’s EPL season is going south pretty fast and there is talk of an overhaul at the club. That could potentially turn out to be good news for Major League Soccer fans.

The News of the World in England reports that Chelsea star Didier Drogba, who scored over the weekend, ispondering a move to MLS following the current EPL season and has apparently already spoken to Red Bulls Frenchman Thierry Henry about the league.

While transfer fodder is always fun, coming back from three goals down is a lot more exciting. The stirring 3-3 tie against Sporting Kansas City which saw Vancouver come back from a 3-0 deficit at home has the Whitecaps’ captain claiming the result even topped their opening day 4-2 win against rivals Toronto FC.

It gets better for Vancouver fans. A club referred to as “one of the big ones” will be coming to Empire Field for a high profile international match against the Whitecaps.

For a glimpse of how it feels on the other side of that 3-3 result, here’s an article that even has to make a Nickleback reference to express the disappointment for Sporting fans.

It’s the same gut-wrenching feeling that could be felt in D.C. United’s camp after they thought they had scored the goal that would ensure them at least a tie in Colorado on Sunday. But the Rapids got another go-ahead goal just seconds later.

Colorado manager Gary Smith says that Jamie Smith’s strike that gave the Rapids the lead for the final time in the match proved to be a “kick in the teeth” for United.

The snow and wind at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park didn’t stop Captain Colorado from coming out and there are the photos to prove it in this gallery. (PHOTOS)

Also in the category of “you’ve got to see it to believe it”: the opposition goes down a man for nearly an entire half but your team can’t get a single shot on goal to force the ‘keeper to make a save. It happened to the Philadelphia Union this weekend.

The most important key to the LA Galaxy’s 1-0 win over the previously undefeated Union? Lining up David Beckham in a position we’re not used to seeing.

If you want some “crazy stuff” look no further than Real Salt Lake, who touched down in San Jose, Costa Rica on Sunday ahead of the decisive CONCACAF Champions League semifinal second leg tomorrow. They credit “crazy stuff” from their strength and conditioning coach as a big factor for RSL’s blazing start to the season with a 4-0-1 record in all competitions.

Another undefeated team in MLS this year is the New England Revolution, who will only be getting stronger. The last graph of this Boston Globe piece confirms the impending arrival of a new striker.

Always great to have depth. Just ask Sigi Schmid and the Seattle Sounders who were without star Fredy Monterobut managed to double their goal output. Credit Argentine Mauro Rosales, who “played very well,” according to Schmid.

Brazilian Maicon Santos is making news back in his native Brazil for something he’s not even responsible for. This miss against Chivas USA has made the rounds among the Brazilian soccer media.

The headlines from TFC also come when manager Aron Winter writes a letter. He issued a note to media that brings an end to the North American sports tradition of opening the locker room to the media after a match – at least in Toronto. Read the letter, which calls the locker room “sacred.”

The highlights of the international weekend: AC Milan’s easy 3-0 win over Inter, Porto’s title clinching victory over Benfica, Wayne Rooney’s stunning hat trick accompanied by a profanity-laced celebration and Jose Mourinho’s nine-year home undefeated streak coming to an end with Real Madrid’s loss this weekend.

But we would be absolutely remiss not to highlight the Michael Jackson statue unveiling at Fulham FC. This video from the BBC is sure to bring you a chuckle and we’re not talking about Mohammed Al Fayed’s dancing or telling anyone who doesn’t like it to “go to hell.” (VIDEO)

In other world news, the travels of former MetroStars manager Carlos Queiroz now have him in Iran.

Lastly, back in this region of the world, it looks like Japan will eventually back out from the 2011 Copa America. American fans will wonder if there is the potential of US involvement should Japan officially withdraw.
