It took 16 years, but Switzerland finally surrendered their first World Cup goal with Chilean winger Mark Gonzalez's (above) 75th minute strike as the Swiss fell 1-0 in Port Elizabeth Monday night. The result gave Chile six points after two games in the group -- the first time since hosting the tournament in 1962 that the Chileans have won their first two group matches.
Both teams entered the game coming off 1-0 victories in their 2010 curtain raisers with Chile easily dispatching Honduras in Nelspruit while Switzerland pulled off the shock of the tournament, upsetting Spain last Wednesday in Durban.
The Swiss were going to be hard pressed to keep the Chileans off the score sheet when midfielder Valon Behrami was judged to have thrown an elbow and sent off by Saudi Arabian referee Khalil al Ghamdi in the 31st minute. Having to play nearly an hour down a man, Ottmar Hitzfeld's men were lucky not to go behind sooner, but Swiss goalkeeper Diego Benaglio continued with the performance he gave against Spain, making six saves including a back-to-back effort early in the match.
Chile, who have shown the willingness to attack eventually wore down a tough Swiss defense when Esteban Paredes' cross found Gonzalez at the six yard box, with the South African-born winger heading towards an empty net.
