Santos scored in the 76th minute, just seven minutes after coming into the match, when he headed home a Sacha Kljestan corner kick from six yards out. Kljestan put his corner right on the head of the onrushing Santos, who found the space in the box to head home inside the right post of Fire goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra

Husidic, who scored the first of the Fire’s two goals in last week’s shutout victory over Houston, gave Chicago the lead eight minutes after the break. The play started when Chicago midfielder Mike Banner received a Marco Pappa pass on the left sideline.

Banner, who came on in the 22nd minute after Justin Mapp sustained a lower left leg injury, hit a cross towards winger Patrick Nyarkoat the back post. Nyarko drew Chivas goalie Zach Thorntonout of the net before finding the charging Husidic, who tapped the ball in from three yards out.

After Chivas USA had equalized, the Fire came close to adding a second goal in the 80th minute. Again, Nyarko was in the middle of the action, getting behind the Chivas defense and running onto a ball on the right wing. The Ghanaian winger cut in along the end line but could not find either of the two Chicago players running towards the net, and Chivas were able to clear the danger.
Nearly all the action took place in the second half of the game. The best chance of the first half came five minutes from the interval, when Kljestan tried his luck from distance. The Chivas captain lashed a right-footed effort at net from 35 yards, forcing Dykstra to parry the ball out for a corner kick.

Brian McBride made his 200th regular season appearance for the Fire, after fellow Chicago forward Collins John was a late scratch.
